This is a landmark of metal of sort as nothing in all of metal or music at large sounds like it. It shows a band with incredible chemistry and potential (which they would certainly live up to), and the only real problem with it today is that it seems a bit dated and overshadowed by what the band would go on to release later in their careers.Īfter a promising debut all comes together in a magnificent way for SYSTEM OF A DOWN on TOXICITY. Highlights to look out for include 'Suite-Pee', 'Know', 'Ddevil' (nope, that wasn't a typo!), 'Peephole' and of course the classic, 'Sugar'.Īs a whole, this is a cracking debut. It's a recognizable style that very few have been able to replicate. Frantically shifting from crunchy riffs to odd, out-of-tune bends and licks. Vocalist Serj Tankian has expertly managed to blend all kinds of singing, from melodic clean vocals to shouting, a wide range of eccentric falsetto, something considerably theatrical, and what can only be described as "vocal effects", it could be seen as an acquired taste, but it's certainly unique! And his vocals are perfectly backed by Daron Malakian's guitars. Certainly not a record for the weak-hearted.

It's dirty, gritty, and full of rage and spite. It's raw and aggressive, yet at times can be soothing and melodic, whilst maintaining a take-no-prisoners "fuck the world" attitude. System of a Down's self-titled debut album is literally all over the place, from calm to erratic in a heartbeat. It's 1998, and with nu metal slowly getting its footing and revitalizing what was, at that point, a dying metal scene, there's no denying that amongst the rap metal hybrid acts such as Limp Bizkit and Rage Against the Machine, and the teenage angst ridden beats of Papa Roach and Korn, there was one band who had a unique sound of their own, and that band was Spineshank. A monumental success and one of metals most revered albums, there's really no excuses for not hearing this by now! With the release of 'Toxicity', System of a Down became one of those few bands that are truly in a league of their own, and who's future will forever be defined by this album.
'Prison Song', 'Science', 'Deer Dance', 'Jet Pilot', 'Bounce', 'Psycho' and 'Shimmy' are all incredible songs that are definitely worth a listen, and then there's the title track and closing track 'Aerials', which were both released as singles and, while not as well known as 'Chop Suey', have still gone on to become metal classics in their own right.
However, there's more to this release than just one song, and 'Toxicity' is absolutely overflowing with hits. Such is its reputation that non-metal fans love it too! With its unusual lyrics and unique vocal style, 'Chop Suey', besides being one of the most well-known, beloved and recognizable metal songs of all time, transcends the metal genre. Of course, this album is best known for one song, and we all know what that is, don't we? 'Chop Suey'. Right from start to finish this is a relentless assault on the senses.
The chemistry between the band members is incredible, with special mention to unique and eccentric vocalist Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian's erratic and intense guitar work. With nu metal at its peak, the band's sound was perfect to appeal to fans both old and new, and with one absolute colossal hit, they were ready for worldwide mega stardom.įollowing on from where their previous album left off, 'Toxicity' is a fast, furious and frantic release that refuses to let up for a single moment. After gaining a huge cult following with their self-titled 1998 debut, System of a Down exploded worldwide with their 2001 follow-up, 'Toxicity'.
